This project included the de‐channelization (concrete‐removal) and restoration of a portion of Chollas Creek and the construction of a trail with landscaping around the trail and on the restored north bank of the creek. The project improved surface water quality and reduced high-volume surface run-off. The development of the trail segment augmented recreational spaces to connect communities to the emerging Chollas Creek Watershed Regional Park.
The project area was identified in the City of San Diego’s Chollas Creek Enhancement Program to benefit from habitat restoration and the development of a trail system, improving water quality and quality of life.
The project included the construction of a new decomposed granite trail, just across from the City of San Diego’s Sunshine Berardini Park, as well as a safe crossing from the new trail on the south side of Federal Boulevard across the street from the park. This ADA-compliant trail is designed to drop down the slopes in two locations to avoid the need to relocate sewer line manholes. The project is in the final design and construction phase.
