Project Description
RICK worked in collaboration with the Dutch Nelsen Chapter of the Korean War Veterans and the City of Aurora to bring to life a lasting tribute to the men and women who served in the Korean War. Widely regarded as the “forgotten war,” this memorial seeks to elevate the recognition and storytelling for future generations. The project reflects RICK’s experience in designing meaningful, story-driven public spaces.
Veteran-Focused Site Planning and Cultural Context
Located within Generals Park at Fitzsimons, the memorial is situated near the original Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, the Anschutz University Hospital, and the VA Hospital—making it uniquely accessible to veteran and healthcare communities. The park setting offers a tranquil lake, shaded gathering spaces, restrooms, and generous parking for community events.
Collaborative Design Process and Educational Integration
The initial design concepts were developed by graduate students from CU’s Landscape Architecture Graduate program. RICK led the advancement of those ideas into final design, construction documents, and presentation exhibits. The memorial design was guided by veteran input and incorporates interpretive elements that invite quiet reflection while telling the full story of the war—from the 1950 outbreak through the 1953 armistice and beyond.
Public Engagement and Accessibility
The project was initiated years ago by the veterans themselves, with RICK stepping in as a design partner to translate their vision into a built space. Accessibility, serenity, and historical integrity were key design pillars.
