RICK performed civil engineering services for the San Diego State University (SDSU) Basketball Performance Center design-build project alongside Hunt Construction, the prime general contractor. RICK provided schematic design documents through construction, including utility relocation plans, precise grading and drainage, and ADA access to the new performance center. Additionally, a multi-level solution was created by RICK to address the hillside site next to the existing Viejas Arena, in an effort to continue the day-to-day operations on the new performance center site. Toward the latter end of the project, RICK provided construction phase services, including construction staking.
The performance center is fully-branded to create a unique environment for SDSU athlete development and recruiting. Its design aesthetic embody the mission of SDSU: “ . . . strive to be recognized as a leader in diversity and inclusion, promote an environment of teamwork, leadership, and personal accountability” while housing a Pac-12 athletic center for athletes to practice, train, and compete.
The $15M performance center includes a state-of-the art facility meant to enhance the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athlete’s “experience” when entering the building. For example, when entering the performance center with an access card, the lobby television will immediately begin playing a personalized SDSU highlight tape from the previous season. Additionally, each athlete has immediate access to practice gymnasiums, team rooms for both men and women, coach locker rooms, a film room, and a sports medicine suite.
